Many families in Athens County are struggling to meet basic needs and for some, hunger is at the top of their list. According to the USDA, Athens County has the highest food insecurity rate in the state with 20.4% of residents wondering where they will get their next meal.
Athens County Department of Job and Family Services works closely with the Athens County Food Pantry www.athenscountyfoodpantry.org/ and the Athens Catholic Community Food Pantry www.athenscatholic.org/accfoodpantry to provide supplemental and emergency food boxes to eligible Athens County residents.
Pantries across the country are expanding services in the face of the constant need and increased food costs straining limited resources. Athens County is no different.
Through the generosity of donors and community partners we are able to purchase and pack supplemental food boxes and bags. On average, 650 food boxes are distributed each month here in Athens County.
In addition, funded partially through the generous support of the Rocky Community Improvement Fund, the Osteopathic Heritage Foundation of Nelsonville, the Athens County Foundation and the Ohio University Credit Union; the Operation Full Belly project helps to fill the critical need to provide emergency food boxes to those that might not meet the USDA-mandated food pantry criteria or who have an emergent need prior to their 30-day eligibility date.
Our success against this battle of hunger depends on YOU, our community partners. Donations from YOU will help us to feed Athens County and stop hunger in Southeast Ohio.

Athens County Back-to-School Bash
Each year Athens County Department of Job and Family Services, HAPCAP and their community partners host the Athens County Back-to-School Bash. The event offers basic school supplies to our low-income families. Eligible students may receive items such as a backpack, basic school supplies, a school spirit shirt, socks and a new pair of shoes. Community partners also provide additional services, information and support items for the event.
We believe that investing in the development of our children at their earliest stages of development is one of the single most important investments we can make. Our children are our future, and we are asking for your support of that future.
This is your chance to make a difference for approximately 1,500 disadvantaged children from across Athens County. A gift of just $75 can supply a child with the basic school supplies and the hope that a quality education unfolds. Please consider a gift of any amount and show our children that you care.
So the question to you is not whether we can afford to invest in every child; it is whether we can afford not to.
Won't you Donate Today to the Athens County Back-to-School Bash?
